A Quilling tribute to the London Olympics 2012

It is the all  important day that not only the athltes but  the entire sporting world and sporting fans were waiting for, London Olympics 2012. This is my entry to the sports theme competition in a quilling group on face book. I wanted to do something different. I love reading history and enjoy all the mythical stories and tales of all countries. Since olympics and Athens are closely connected I wanted to do a quilling  in remembrance of the past and present.
 Athena is the name of an important goddess for the Greeks. She is the patron goddess of Athens the goddess of wisdom, a goddess of arts and crafts (agriculture, navigation, spinning, weaving, and needlework), the favorite daughter of her father Zeus, and, as a war goddess with a focus on strategy more than bloodshed, an active participant in the Trojan War. She gave Athens the gift of the olive tree, providing oil, food, and wood. (article from the web)
Since the first Olympic torch is lit by the high priestess in Greece and given out to the world before any olympic games, I wanted to quill something to symbolise this. So hear is my imagination and tribute to all athletes of London olympics 2012. Good luck to all the participants

Kandy Esala Perehera in graphic quilling

Esala Perahera (the festival of the tooth) is a religious festival held in Sri Lanka and is a very colourful pageant, that takes place in the hill capitol, in July or August. It is a unique symbol of Sri Lanka.  and a Buddhist festival. The colourful pageant consists of dances and decorated elephants with the Majestic tasker(only elephants with tasks are taken) in his full glory, carrying the casket of the sacred tooth relic on his back. The pocession which takes about six or seven hours round the streets of Kandy, takes place daily, starting from the temple around 8pm, for about two weeks before the full moon and ends on the day of full moon.More than 150 elephants and over 500 dancers participate in the procession. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'.

The Dalada Perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century.

The perahera theme has been done by many artists in paintings. This is my version in quilling

Lady in the garden (Quilled)

To day I am posting once again my very first quilling project that I did in  2007 and posted in May 2009 cause that is the time I started my blog. If you look closely all the quilled bits are  not in the usual way that you may have seen in books or tutorials or even from classes you may have gone to. It is because I had never heard or seen quilling before 2009. My love and hobby from very young age was hand craft. I only had to see something and I would never rest till I did it at least once. My flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/laktile has pictures of all my craft since 2009. My Facebook craft album which is public  has all my craft pictures too.

One day as I was going through some books in the Arts/Craft section in a book store, I came across a little magazine with a picture of a rat. It looked like paper circles but  it did not interest me much,so I put it aside. I spend all my free time creating something and one day I had run out of all my ideas and I remembered the paper rat. I knew it was done with strips of paper, so I started twisting and rolling paper for many days till I was satisfied with the result. And the first result is the leafs on the right hand corner which I created with the comb (My tutorial on this leaf is on the blog). Now there are many who do this leaf. Some give credit to me but most don't :)

This picture is my imagination and not from any book or copied from anyone. My visitors to the blog has now increased so much, but I know many of you would not have seen this,cause this was one of my first postings three years ago. I have had many offers for this but I could never make up my mind to part with it. Hope you all would like it :)

Graphic Quilling of a Gerbera flower

A try at graphic quilling of a Gerbera flower. Not in a mood for a serious design. I will just keep on with some flowers till I make up my mind for something creative. So don't stop visiting my blog. Will be back with something you would like . May be a kids stuff :)

Quilled Sunflower Card

I am into experimenting some flowers in quilling, till I get a new idea for a quilling project. Sunflower is something I had in mind for a long time for quilling. I have not seen a natural sunflower. So not very sure if it looks like this. Seen some pictures on line to get an idea of how it looks. Had this lovely card with me for some time and it was a very beautiful background for the sunflower. Wish I had a better idea for the leaf as I am not very satisfied with it. Hope you like it. Next is an Orchid :)

Decoretive Elephant in Quilling

Quilling with black strips gives a rich look to the picture. Specially for graphic quilling. A decorated elephant,  carries the sacred relic at religious pageants in Sri Lanka. They are very well trained to walk, like a model on a catwalk. The temple elephants even offers flowers at the temple. My picture is that of a elephant offering flowers before he joins the parade. Hope you like it.

Quilled in Black and white

I could never put my quilling tools and strips aside and take time off my quilling. I try putting them aside when ever I complete a large project, but it never works that way. So hear I am again with a quick card. which was effortless and quick. Hope you like it :)

Two Gentle Souls (Quilled)

Beeing away from my hobbies for some time but I am back with another quilling of Lord Buddha. It is my immagination of Lord Buddha meditating near the river bank, with lots of flowers and beauty that can only  be found in a forest.  The little deer brings some berries as offering to the lord.

The bits of quilling I used for the body of the Buddha and deer is extreamly small and is made of 1/8" strips. The tree, the robes and the flowers too are of 1/8" strips. The back ground was painted useing oil paint but the trees are quilled with 1/16 " strips useing Susans honey comb method. Will be back soon :D

Rosary made by me

This is nothing to do with quilling, but it is very precious to me cause I made it myself. Lost my rosary while I was on a tour in UK this month. I treasured it,  as it was given to me by a relative who brought it from the Vatican city and is not living now. She died of cancer a few years back. I try reciting the rosary at least once a day and not having it, was a great loss to me. What ever rosary I tried buying, did not satisfy me, so I decided to make my own rosary.

My brother gifted me a chain of ivory beads about 30 years back. I never used it as I do not where bead chains, but kept it. The beads are carved like little round roses. This was ideal for my rosary. All the loops and rings are designed with copper wire, so it would match the ivory colour of the beads.

So hear I add another new item to my craft collection. But look out a new quilling is on the way. Till then happy crafting friends

Little Poo and Pigy

Just a little picture made to be gifted to a friend who liked my earlier quilling of Poo Bear very much. The framed picture is just
6" x 4". The quilled picture looks more colourful than the photograph. I wish I could have got a better shot. Hope my little friend would like this. May not have time for another quilling for April or May as I will be taking a break from my craft and going off on a tour. Will come back with new ideas of quilling soon :)

Creative Quilling - PEACE DOVE

This picture is just a time killer. I was cleaning my messy table and found  lots of black strips of paper all over it. Was wondering if I should throw them away but made up my mind that I should use them to create something. So this is the result of it. The dove should have been in white, but I had to make use of the black strips. My friends on facebook thinks it does not matter, so hear it is flying around my blog saying, Hi !!, to you :) Hope you like it. Happy quilling till I am back with a something new

IT'S SUMMER (Quilled)

A painting of this picture was posted on facebook by one of my friends. Loved it the moment I set eyes on it. It was a unique painting of a girls face at a glance and then the beautiful flower and leaf arrangement. It was so artistic that I made up my mind to quill it as my next  project. I named it as "IT"S SUMMER" cause it is the time of year that flowers are in full bloom in my country. Hope you like my quilling. Will be back soon with the next. Easter Bunny and Egg (Quilled)

In keeping with my promise to quill at least 2 pictures a month I am posting this picture. I am not very satisfied with it as I know the colour of the rabbit is not good. I very nearly threw it off but felt sorry for the poor guy and kept him back. I think the mood we are in at the moment we start a project should be pleasant for the end result to be good. Any way hear it is and hope my next one works out well :D

The Holy Cross, paper quilled

Easter is the reminder for all Christians of the great sacrifice Jesus Christ did for all of us. He was a young man of 33, who had a whole beautiful life to live as he wished. But he gave it all up, to save us from sin. The Holy Cross is the symbol of all Christians. I quilled the cross as my Easter quilling project, so that the none-christians would understand that Easter is not only the Bunny and Eggs :D. The cross is quilled with dark brown paper of 1/8" strips of paper. The flowers are not quilled. Wanted to do something a bit different. Hope you like it. Wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Quilled Table Lamp

So many strips of coloured paper on my work table and a little jar of "Nestle's Smarties" gave me the idea of using all the colours in one project. The colourful sweets  made the little container look beautiful. Next I wanted a suitable picture to use all the colours and then my eyes caught this kids colouring book with this picture to paint. So hear it is my completed picture in quilling. I love the beehive quilling (INVENTED BY SUSAN FROM SUSANS' QUILLING CARDS) It is easy and quick to finish a project. It is beautiful and gives the look of  punch art embroidery when complete. Ate up quite a lot of smarties too while quilling as the sweet that went into my mouth was the colour of the strip of paper I used to quill and the colour combination came out fine. I always love to use a lot of bright colours in my work. Hope you like it. So be in touch, will be back soon with another quilling soon :D

Painting of a Scenery

Quilling is not my only hobby though I have not done anything other than quilling during the past 3years. The background scenery was a painting I did on a wall of a indoor garden of a little restaurant.This wall was about 12 feet tall and I had to get on and off the ladder many times to paint it. The two grinning guys are the owner of it and his son. They were happy with the painting. I think I did a good job. (Does it sound like a monkey praising his tail??)

Lord Budda in Paper Quilling

Quilling a Buddha image was on my mind for some time, but it was nothing like this. I wanted to quill "Laughing Buddha".But each time I started or thought of quilling it my inner self stopped me from doing it. May be because I am a Catholic and I respect  the religion I am in and I equally respect all religions, I did not think it was very respectful to quill Lord Buddha with a big stomach and a grin from yer to yer and something stops me from doing it. Mysteriously I happened to come across this image in the news paper as if it said quill me, and I started on it immediately. If you think it is nice, credit is not to my ability but something inside me that  guided to get it wright. Looking at the robes I really am amazed that it came out beautiful. Wanted to try the same method on the face, but was scared that I might spoil the features. Hope you would like it. Happy quilling till I think of something new. Take care :)

Creative Quilling - Fancy Peacock

Hi friends and visitors, hear I am again with a new quilling. My 1st for the month of February. Peacocks are always my favourite bird as long as they don't open their mouth :D. They have such an ugly voice. May be God made them like that cause they are so proud. The horse was not given horns  too because they are so proud. Any way I have quilled many peacocks and this one is another addition. Batik decorations are famous in my country (Sri Lanka). This quilling is an inspiration I got from one of them. I like to use very bright colours as it attracts and get more attention :)
