Sigiriya Frescos (Sri Lanka) in Quilling

Not been quilling for sometime but here I am with a quilled version of the world famous Sigiriya frescos. I would like you to know a little bit of Sigiriya & how important it is to us Sri Lankans. So I am posting an article too, taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigiriya

.sigiriya (Lion Rock, Sinhalese - සීගිරිය, pronounced see-gee-REE-yah) is located in the central Matale District of the Central Province, Sri Lanka in an area dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa the site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 AD) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure —Sīhāgiri, the Lion Rock. The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.^[1]

Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.^[2] It is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.^[3]

Zentangle/Doodle art of a temple elephant

Most of you visit my blog to view my quillings but quilling is not my only hobby. I am a multi handy crafter. I do saree painting and cutwork,dress making, cookery, pencil drawing, quilling, knitting, crocheting ,flower making and many more handy craft. I got stuck into quilling as I love it the most, of all my hobbies. But I am a bit fed up with quilling at the moment. I have run out of ideas too. Coming back to this picture, it is the first attempt of zentangle or doodle art of mine. It would not be as nice as I liked it to be but I leave it to you, to judge. Your comments would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Rainbow Dash - In quilling

I do not know much about this character but I thought it would look nice in quilling. So here he is. The garden is my imaginative paradise where I go to relax & get away from earthly problems. Dash is quilled with 1/8" strips and the background strips goes to even 1 mm . The leaves on the left are quilled with a strip a little broader than a thread. Hope you like my picture. Double-headed eagle, in quilling

The article is taken from WIKIPEDIA,  to let you know what this quille bird means. The double-headed eagle is a common symbol in heraldry and vexillology. It is most commonly associated with the Byzantine Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire and their successor states. In Byzantine heraldry, the heads represent the Emperor having authority over both secular and religious matters, Byzantine emperors were regarded as Christ's vicegerent on Earth. It also signified the dominance of the Byzantine Emperors over both East and West. In the Holy Roman Empire's heraldry, it  represented the church and the state. Several Eastern European nations adopted it from the Byzantines and continue to use it as their national symbol to this day. This symbol is used in many ancient flags of Sri Lanka too. The country I come from :)

It's been a month since I quilled anything. Sometimes you get bored doing the same thing all the time so I had to take a break. Hope you would like this too. Thank you my dear followers and visitors for keeping my blog going :)

Quilled Carnations

Another experimental quilling that turned out into a carnation flower. Could not find a design to suite my mood for quilling, so I ended up with a whole lot of experimental quillings. After sometime of serious thinking, the idea of a carnation hit my mind.Could not show you only carnations, so I created this quilled flower arrangement. This could have been used on a corner stand if it was real but as it is not, it could go on the wall of your sitting room.  Shall be back with something better next time. Happy quilling till then

The history of Sri Lanka begins around 30,000 years ago when the island was first inhabited. Chronicles, including the Mahavamsa, the Dipavamsa, the Culavamsa and the Rajavaliya, record events from the beginnings of the Sinhalese monarchy in the 6th century BC; through the arrival of European Colonialists in the 16th century; and to the disestablishment of the monarchy in 1815. Some mentions of the country are found in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the books of Gautama Buddha's teachings. Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BC by Arahat Mahinda (son of the Indian emperor Ashoka the Great).

From the 16th century, some coastal areas of the country were ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Sri Lanka was ruled by 181 kings from the Anuradhapura to Kandy periods. ^[1] After 1815 the entire nation was under British colonial rule and armed uprisings against the British took place in the 1818 Uva Rebellion and the 1848 Matale Rebellion. Independence was finally granted in 1948 but the country remained a Dominion of the British Empire.

A little bit about my country taken from  "History of Sri Lanka - WIKIPEDIA" in order to understand my picture. For centuries starting from the stone age people have been artist in my country. This picture was a painting done by artists in the 16th century during the reign of our last king known as the Kandyan Period. It is formed by 9 women to the shape of an elephant. I did it in quilling. Hope you enjoy it without a head ace cause I had one when I was quilling it .lol.
 

Quilling with Comb - More ideas

A few more ideas of quilling with comb. The design in the 8th window of the top collage too is done with part of the hair brush comb. When the comb brush was split in two, the top of it  had 5 teeth on top and one about 3cm below the third tooth. It came in handy to create a design like the one in the bottom last window and the one above it (5 petal design at the bottom of the 6th window)

More ideas on quilling with a comb. I need to repeat , may be you are doing it this way, but what I demonstrate is how I do it, and to teach others who may not know it as yet. I don't think I need to explain how to do it as I have taken clear pictures of details on how to do it step by step. No one has complained that they did not understand my previous tutorials, So I assume all understood it and will be able to follow these too. 1 to 6 in the above picture shows how to create the design on  7. This can be used in what ever way you like in a project.  In the collage below with 4 pics , you can coil a strip of paper the way I have shown and insert it in the centre of the completed  picture above  and create another design. If you glue a strip around it, you find a third design (2nd box below). There is no limit, if you try. The third quilling in the picture can create the bottom design in the 4th box. Quilling leaves with comb part 2

 This is part two of how to quill a sprig of leaves with a comb. Most people don't have the hair brush that I did the earlier quilling but a comb any one would have. You don't need special combs for it. Any comb would do. I have used a very large comb so the instructions would be very clear to follow, but I have many combs to quill with. The fine tooth comb is best to get the leaves very close. I have shown the small sprig that I quilled with the fine tooth comb.

I have also shown how to cut strips of paper with a plastic ruler. If you draw a line on the ruler to the desired size you normally use for quilling and then align it on the edge of the paper(THE WAY I HAVE SHOWN), instead of how we normally cut the paper leaving the strip to be cut off, you can cut even strips with out wasting time marking on the paper. Hope you got it :).

Quilling Ideas for a sprig of leaves useing a comb

 This time I have decided to show you how I quill leaves for various projects. When a landscape quilling is done, you need different types of leaves  to make the picture look realistic. This is one of my filler leaves. You may be using it too but there may be many who do not know and would like to learn how to do it.

You can do it with a comb, but hear I have used a plastic hair brush, used to tint hair(I have used a tint brush that comes with LOREAL hair tint product) . It is like the brush in pic.1. I have cut it in two as it is easy to twist the paper. Pic.2 shows how to pass it through the teeth in a zig zag pattern. Pic.3 shows, how to apply glue, so you could paste the strip of paper.4 is how the strip is turned round and glued.5 shows that you should press it hard till it is well pasted.  6. shows how the glued back looks. It should be very neat and well adjusted. When it is dry take it out, and it should look like pic.7. In 8 you should press down and flatten the glued strip.
Now make another one in the same manner. Glue both parts to look like pic.11.

You can use  it to fill in flower baskets and any other projects that need leaves.    You can also glue all the petals the way I have shown in pic 10 and create another leaf design, like  the 2nd one in the picture below. I will try to show you more designs created with combs as and when possible.  Add a comment hear if you need any help :)

ANSWER TO MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BRAND OF THE COMB. DON'T BOTHER TOO MUCH ABOUT IT.USE ANYTHING YOU THINK FIT ENOUGH. YOU COULD EVEN FIX SOME NEEDLES OR PINS ON TO A BORD RESEMBLING THIS DESIGN AND QUILL ON IT. JUST USE YOUR IMMAGINATION AND IDEAS WOUD DROP ON TO YOUR LAP ;)

Lord of the Jungle (paper quilled Lion)

           

              In keeping with my promise to do at lest, two projects for the month, I just completed my 2nd quilling for the month of  February. It was my idea to do a lion with a landscape background but had to do with only the head as I ran short of red brown paper. You quillers may know how difficult it is to find shades of brown. But I think this would do as hanging on to a particular quilling for long gets bored and you feel like dumping it off. Now I may stop quilling for a while for a break & consider another hobby. Some times I wonder if it is a waste of time, as all my quillings are piling up in a box. May be I should start a business :)
 

Meet My Sweet Little Valantine (Quilled)

First of all I would like to wish all of you followers,visitors and friends who never fail to visit my Blog and leave all those lovely comments, a very happy Valentines Day. Hope you have a romantic day with your valentine :)
Valentine's day is special for all who love one another. So why not Kitty and Doggy ? They are so in love. The inspiration for this quilling is from an embroidery design I found on the web. I never like to do cards cause all my valuable time and effort would end in some dust bin. I do wall hangings as it may end up on a wall or in a place of respect ( lol) at least for a while.
Read a lot on blogs and facebook of quillers steeling other quillers designs and pretending, it to be their brain wave. Creating a quilled picture is nerve racking and only the original designer goes through all of it. Doing a copy is easy as the picture is there for an idea. So please make use of the idea but don't duplicate. Try doing your own pictures. You may fail at first but keep on practising and you would be a master of it.

Butterflies and flowers (Quilled)

 This would be my first quilling for 2013. It has been a busy season with Christmas and all the  functions that come along with it. Just found some time in between to do this picture. Butterfly was an idea that I had for some time but did not really get down to quilling it. Hope you like my creation. Happy quilling till I get back with another one :)

Welcome 2013 (Quilld)

A quick quilled card to end the year and to wish all my dear followers and visitors to my blog, A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!. Thank you for all the visits you made, and for all the lovely comments you gave my creations. I hope I would be able to do better creations in the future. December is always hectic and there is no time for hobbies. But I had to finish the year  with a " thank you quilling"  to all of you who visit my blog from all over the world. Hope you would come back in 2013 too, cause I would try to bring you new designs in quilling.

                                                                                          

WINTER WONDER (Quilled)

Posting my Christmas quilling for 2012 of mummy bear and baby out on a joy ride on snow. The trees are done in beehive method (originally by Susan ). Did a close up of the bear, so you would understand the way I did it. You could call it paper embroidery cause I think it would be the most appropriate name for the method. In machine embroidery we use long and short stitch and I have used this method in paper to fill up the bears. I have used 1/8" strips for the project. Hope you like it. My Pet Dog (Quilled)

While surfing the net for an idea to quill, I came a cross  this picture in embroidery designs. I liked it and thought I would give it a go in quilling. There were some strips of shaded brown, left over after I quilled the leopard. decided I would make use of it to quill this picture. I have made a lot of changes from the embroidery design to suit my quilling but I give full credit to the embroidery site, where I found the idea . I wouldn't want to get into trouble of copying someones design. Hope you like it.

The Leopard of Sri Lanka in paper quilling (Quilled)

Many of my friends have qilled the tiger. Some have done the full tiger and some have done the face only. My ambition was to quill a lion but my friend Paula (ON FB) had done two very beautiful quillings of the tiger's face. This inspired me to do a leopard. I usually try not to quill what someone has already done. So this seems to be a good idea. It wasn't an easy task. The picture is only 8"x12". The quilled pieces are extremely small. So many bits to be quilled but I think it was worth all my trouble. I would not quill for a while as Christmas is round the corner and it means extra work and preparations but not for long. Will be back with a Christmas creation. Have fun and add a comment if you have time :)

Basket of Fruits (Quilled)

Sorry for keeping my visitors and followers for nearly a month with no posts. But you have not kept away from visiting my blog cause my visitors count has only increased and so has the followers. Thank you so much. I did not have my PC and it was difficult to get on the Internet.

A basket of fruits was on my mind for some time, but there was no motivation to quill it. With no PC, it gave me plenty of free time to quill. Hope you like it as much as my other quillings. I am on to the next project and a posting will be done soon. Thanks for all your support and comments on my work :)

The Lovers (Quilled)

Been some time since I did a posting on my blog. Did a few greeting cards and could not do a wall hanging for September after the Red Rooster.  This is a combination of graphic quilling and husking. The only tool I used was my doggy comb. The picture is 12'' by 10" and I have used 1/16" and 1/8" strips, cut out of A4 coloured paper. Hope you like it. No idea for my next quilling, but will be back soon :)

Quilled Red Rooster

Been a bit bored with quilling and went on to some of my other hobbies, but could not keep away from quilling for long. On a visit to China I was fascinated with the art of Chinese paper cuttings . many times I wanted to try it, but their was no motivation for it. so I decided I would quill it instead. I choose to do it in red on white background. I have not surfed the net, to find out why they do it in red and white, but I think they may have a reason for it .I had no reason what so ever but did it in these to colours cause I liked the colour combination : ). The design is what came into my head as I was quilling it. The idea came from a design of a rooster, in paper art. But I made changes to suite my quilling. Hope you like it
